La Cocina runs 2:20 hours with a plot that could have been told in 60 minutes and lacks depth
The entire black-and-white film takes place in a bustling tourist restaurant in New York City’s Times Square, where illegal immigrants from all over the world dine. Throughout the day, various scenes combine with a mix of cinematic elements to depict the daily lives of people with little hope: prep, tense preparation in the kitchen, arguments between employees, daydreaming during breaks, theft, and the relationship between chef Pedro and waitress Julia, who wants to abort their child.
The film has a few funny moments and some particularly experimental shots
But unfortunately, the stories of many of the characters remain largely untold. Instead, Ruizpalacios repeatedly opts for very flat dialogue and long, drawn-out close-ups that drag on like chewing gum.
Overall, the film was a dull watch
Furthermore, the portrayal of Pedro and Julia’s relationship is so clichéd that it resembles a Bollywood movie. If it weren’t for its world premiere at the Berlinale Film Festival, I would have left after 30 minutes.
