Emilia, the leader of the cartel, hires Rita, an underrated lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live as the real her. Karla Sofia Gascón talks about the two years of training that went into this demanding role at Jacques Audiard. Jacques Audiard said that he was inspired by the idea for the musical from a chapter in the novel about a drug dealer who wants to change his identity.

Most of the story is presented with musical numbers, so if you’re not into that genre, stay away from it
Emilia Pérez is a 2024 musical drama starring Zoe Saldana as Rita, a lawyer who is doing her job until a drug lord kidnaps her and demands a sex change. Along the way, Selena Gomez plays Jess, the wife of a drug lord who is adjusting to a new life with the children she raised with him after a gender transition she doesn’t know about. Then, of course, Karla Sofía Gascón plays Emilia Pérez, a drug lord who has changed gender and continues (no longer “she”) to build her empire. This movie in particular had a very strange effect on me after it ended, going into it blind and honestly I should, because the movie is usually very unexpected and quite comical in places.
I thought the musical show at the end was boring but I felt it summed up the story a bit
also. After the film’s director and cast introduced it to us, the film started and the audience spread laughter and joy at some aspects of the film and I appreciate that. The film shines best due to its amazing cinematography (which was breathtaking to say the least), strong acting by everyone involved and some musical numbers. Now why I say “some”; of the musical numbers is because most of them are pretty great and impactful to the story, but as the film progressed, the musical numbers became much less striking than they were before and became clichéd because of it.

But don’t listen to me though, there is a film for everyone and I really liked some elements of this film and I think most of you will too when it comes out soon enough. All in all, although not as well delivered as I would have hoped, Emilia Pérez is still a cinematic achievement in musical numbers and great acting, which makes the film all the more captivating and entertaining. If you like musicals, give Emilia Pérez a try, I think it will successfully deliver what audiences can expect from it.
